What Causes Droopy Lids?
Most people use “droopy lids” to describe one of these issues:
- Excess upper eyelid skin (hooding): Loose skin folds over the lash line
- Brow descent: The brow drops, pushing tissue downward
- Volume loss: Hollowness near the brow bone can make the lid area look heavy
- True eyelid ptosis: The eyelid muscle is weak, and the lid margin sits lower
When Upper Eyelid Surgery Helps Most
Upper eyelid surgery (upper blepharoplasty) removes excess skin (and sometimes small amounts of fat) to reduce hooding and create a more open, refreshed look. It’s typically the most effective option when the main problem is extra skin resting on the eyelid, especially if it affects makeup application or peripheral vision. Results can be long-lasting.
When Botox Can Help
Botox doesn’t remove skin. Instead, it can create a subtle “lift” by relaxing the muscles that pull the brow down. Botox works best for:
- Mild brow heaviness, not significant eyelid skin laxity
- Balancing asymmetry
- Softening crow’s feet that contribute to a tired appearance
Results are temporary and usually need maintenance every few months.
When Fillers May Be the Better Choice
Fillers can restore volume around the brow bone or upper lid transition in the right candidate. If hollowness is making the area look sunken or shadowed, filler can improve contour and brightness.
